How to find the age of a Mason & Hamlin Piano

Last updated: February 28, 2018 by admin

Use the following chart of Mason & Hamlin serial numbers to help determine the age of your piano. The serial number of your Mason & Hamlin piano can be found in several locations, depending on what model of Mason & Hamlin you are trying to date.

Contents

  • 1 Mason & Hamlin Serial Number Locations
    • 1.1 1. Model B, A, AA and BB grand pianos
    • 1.2 2. Model 50 Upright Mason & Hamlin
  • 2 Mason & Hamlin Serial Number Date Chart

Mason & Hamlin Serial Number Locations

1. Model B, A, AA and BB grand pianos

  • First, sit at your piano like you are playing it.
  • Then look into the piano plate and to the left of the centre of the piano. There should be a serial number stamped under the letters. The letter will depend on which Mason & Hamlin model you are looking at.

2. Model 50 Upright Mason & Hamlin

You need to lift the lid of the piano and look for the serial number. This will be stamped on the plate of the piano. If you do not find the serial number in this location look for an oval opening in the plate, just left of the centre of the piano. This opening will be backed with a piece of wood. The number stamped in the wood will be the serial number.

@ Beulah Grace Palmer, It looks like it was in late 1902. 1902 12800 – 13599. This may not have shipped until 1903 as it was very late in the 1902 production run.

I bought a Mason and Hamlin. I was told it is a 2018, but my husband found the year I scripted under the pian that says 2016.
    The serial number says 93857.
So how do we really find out the year. I can’t find any website that shows me a serial number past 2013.

@Marie, I have also tried to find this information and can not find a age list either. I would say send the question to them directly and they should be able to answer this for you. Note in many cases the parts are made at different times and that many be the marking for that part of the piano. This happens with many different items. I have included a link to the contact form for Mason and Hamlin for you.

I recently purchased a Mason and Hamlin A6 grand. It has no serial number. It says patent pending 1917. Could someone tell me the year it was made?

My father purchased a refurbished Mason and Hamlin grand back in the ’70s. I found on the soundboard where it states BB1 at the very back of the piano, but the serial number is not there. I couldn’t find anything resembling a serial number on the soundboard. The only thing I found were some numbers stamped in the wood underneath the keyboard. The format looks wrong for a serial number though. It looks like this
    238
    398 81
I could presume the bottom number to be the serial number, but the space between the 2nd and 3rd digit makes me unsure. Any ideas? I’m trying to determine its value and possibly find a buyer in the Dallas, TX area.
